: JREC Protests at Hunter College #29
Did anybody notice the protest at Hunter this afternoon? Well I did, it was kind of hard to miss it! I was walking back from the bank at about 5pm and I heard a massive amount of people shouting. By the time I got back to school, the shouting however became faint and then disappeared. About 2 min later I heard the shouting again, it grew louder and louder and then out of nowhere I saw a swarm of kids cutting across the corner from 67th and Lexington. It was obvious that they were walking around the block. I was a little confused at first because the protests was filled with children of all ages. None of them though looked like they were over 16. I have never seen a protest with children before. The protesters were shouting all types of slogans but the only one I could make out was "HELL NO, WE WONT GO!" They also had tons of posters that said "PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE NOT REAL ESTATE!" "SAVE JREC!"
These protesters are students from JREC, the Julia Richman Education Complex. This education complex is a multi age community where students of all different ages-toddlers to teenagers- and races can attend school. What is so important about this school is that it is not like any other public school in NYC. This education complex is composed of 6 different schools, unique to one another.
Apparently, they were protesting because Hunter college wants to close JREC, relocate it to 25th and 1st, and demolish the existing building because Hunter wants to build a high-rise science tower at their location.
I have never heard of JREC before so if any of you are interested in learning more about the school here is the link.
